About Us

The Nantucket Pond Coalition is a member supported, non-profit organization dedicated to restoring and protecting the ponds on Nantucket. We want them to be enjoyed by generations to come. We support finding scientific solutions to mitigate the accelerated eutrofication of the ponds due to excess nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizer, septic systems and household products.

We support a funding model where “Friends of Hummock Pond” (or any one of the other 29 named ponds on Nantucket) can come together to learn about a pond and help fund efforts to restore, if neccessary and protect that pond.

Each pond is unique and has a natural cycle of filling in to become a wetland. Increased population on Nantucket since WWII has created water quality conditions such as harmful algae, excessive nuisance aquatic vegetation, low dissolved oxygen and other undesirable conditions. Invasive plant species, like phragmites, create long term challenges for a natural pond habitat. We propose to balance the impact of human activity with the protection of Nantucket’s pond and estuary resources through planning, public involvement, education, research and sound resource management.

The Pond Coalition works hand in hand with other island non-profit organizations advocating for water quality. Our Advisory Board is comprised of the top conservation and advocacy groups on Nantucket.

We invite you to be come a “Friend” of your favorite pond and letting us know your interest or concern. Join us in preserving these irreplaceable resources so that they will continue to be enjoyed by all!
